A clamp is rarely the hero of the package - right up until the light needs to live on a pipe, the flag needs one more inch of reach, or a camera team needs a monitor mounted without building a small village of stands. Studio clamp types explained properly means looking beyond jaw size and asking the questions that matter on a working set: What are you attaching to? How much weight is involved? Could it rotate, slip, or become a falling-object problem?
The right clamp saves space, speeds up the setup, and keeps a rig clean. The wrong one creates a shaky accessory mount, chews up a location surface, or sends someone hunting for a stand that should have been used in the first place. Here is how the core clamp families fit into film, television, photo, and content-production workflows.
Start With the Surface and the Load
Before choosing a clamp, identify the receiving surface. Round pipe, square tube, flat furniture edges, door frames, C-stands, truss, grid, and irregular scenic pieces all call for different jaw designs. A clamp that bites beautifully on a 1 1/4-inch speed rail may be a poor choice on thin aluminum tubing or polished architectural millwork.
Then consider the whole load, not just the fixture or accessory. A small LED panel may be light, but add a battery, ball head, receiver, safety cable, and an extended arm, and leverage becomes the real issue. Off-axis loads put more torque on the clamp than a straight-down load. When a rig will be overhead, near talent, or above a public area, use properly rated hardware, a secondary safety where appropriate, and a qualified rigger when the setup moves beyond ordinary grip work.
Clamp ratings are not decoration. Follow the manufacturer's working-load limits and intended use. Do not assume that a clamp holding a 5-pound item on a tabletop is automatically suitable for an overhead rig or a moving vehicle shot.
Studio Clamp Types Explained: The Core Kit
C-clamps and Mafer clamps
The classic C-clamp is still a set staple because it is simple, strong, and useful almost everywhere. Its threaded screw closes against a flat or round surface, making it a practical choice for workboxes, platforms, furniture, studio tables, and structural members that can take the load. Many versions accept baby pins, studs, or accessory receivers, turning an ordinary edge into a mounting point for a small fixture, flag, arm, or practical-control accessory.
A Mafer-style clamp is a more refined, production-oriented variation. It generally provides faster handling, versatile jaw geometry, and common attachment options for baby pins and studs. It is the type of hardware grips reach for when they need a dependable clamp with a broad range of uses rather than a basic hardware-store solution.
The trade-off is surface pressure. Both can mark paint, dent soft wood, or damage delicate finishes if used carelessly. Use protective pads when the location requires it, but remember that padding can reduce grip strength. Never solve a weak clamp choice by cranking the handle until the furniture starts negotiating.
Cardellini clamps
Cardellini clamps earn their reputation on awkward, uneven, and less-than-friendly surfaces. Their opposing jaws can secure to a wide variety of shapes, including pipe, square stock, door frames, and scenic elements that do not offer a clean flat edge. End-jaw and center-jaw versions change where the clamping force sits, which affects access and positioning.
An end-jaw Cardellini is particularly useful when you need to clamp near the end of a pipe or reach around an obstruction. A center-jaw version is often preferable when you want the load more centered over the clamp body. Both are highly versatile for mounting small lights, monitors, flags, and grip accessories, especially when paired with the appropriate baby pin or stud.
They are not magic. The jaws need solid material to grip, and a weird-looking location feature is not automatically structural. Avoid thin trim, loose railings, unsupported conduit, and anything that cannot safely carry the added force.
Super clamps
Super clamps are compact workhorses for small accessories. Their adjustable jaws can grab round or flat stock, and the threaded receiver accepts a range of studs, arms, and adapters. They are excellent for mounting a small LED, articulating arm, wireless receiver, compact monitor, microphone accessory, or tabletop flagging tool to a stand, cart, desk, pipe, or camera-support accessory.
Their small footprint is the appeal, but it also defines their limits. A super clamp is generally not the answer for a large light, a long boom arm, or anything that generates serious torque. Check that the clamping surface is compatible with the jaw range, tighten it correctly, and keep the accessory close to the clamp whenever possible.
For owner-operators, super clamps are the kind of item worth owning in multiples. They disappear into a case, solve frequent mounting problems, and are much faster than improvising with tape and optimism.
Spring clamps and A-clamps
Spring clamps, sometimes called A-clamps, are quick tools for lightweight control work. They are ideal for holding fabric, diffusion, bead board, gels, paper backgrounds, cable dressing, or small reflectors. Their speed is their entire point: squeeze, position, release, move on.
They are not load-rated mounting hardware. A spring clamp can keep a piece of diffusion on a frame or secure a tablecloth over a practical, but it should not be treated as a substitute for a proper grip head, C-clamp, or rated fixture mount. Stronger spring clamps may look convincing, yet vibration and changing angles can still work them loose.
Keep several sizes on the cart. Small versions are useful for tabletop shoots and product work, while larger models handle heavier fabric and larger pieces of temporary light control.
Pipe clamps, grid clamps, and cheeseboros
When the job is specifically about pipe, dedicated pipe and grid hardware makes more sense than forcing a general-purpose clamp to do the work. Pipe clamps are designed around common tubing diameters and may provide a baby pin, junior receiver, or threaded mounting point for fixtures and accessories.
Cheeseboros are purpose-built couplers used to join pipe or attach rigging elements in grid and truss-style environments. Fixed and swivel versions serve different needs: fixed couplers hold a consistent relationship between pipes, while swivels allow angle adjustment. These are serious rigging components, not casual clamps for a last-minute desk mount.
Correct diameter matching is critical. So is knowing whether the pipe is decorative, structural, part of a rated grid, or simply a piece of speed rail in a ground-supported build. For overhead work, follow venue rules, production safety requirements, and the hardware manufacturer's specifications.
Scissor clamps and drop-ceiling clamps
Scissor clamps are designed for suspended ceiling grids and are commonly used to support lightweight fixtures, small LEDs, or other approved accessories in office and practical-location environments. They are tidy and useful when stands would clog a room or create an unwanted reflection.
The ceiling grid itself is the limiting factor. Many drop ceilings are not designed to carry meaningful production loads without supplemental support to the building structure. A scissor clamp may position the fixture, but a safety line or separate support may still be required. If there is any doubt, treat the ceiling as a location constraint, not free rigging real estate.
Choosing the Right Attachment Point
Most clamp decisions are really attachment decisions. A baby pin supports many common lighting and grip fixtures. A junior receiver is for heavier junior-pin equipment. A 3/8-inch or 1/4-20 threaded receiver may suit monitor arms, camera accessories, and compact mounts. Make sure the clamp, adapter, and mounted item use compatible standards before they reach set.
Avoid stacking adapters just because the threads happen to meet. Every added knuckle can introduce play, increase leverage, and complicate safety. A direct, appropriately rated connection is usually cleaner and safer than a tall tower of adapters that looks like it was designed during lunch.
A Practical Clamp Buying Approach
A useful starter selection for most studio and location crews includes a few C-clamps or Mafer-style clamps, a pair of Cardellinis in suitable jaw configurations, several super clamps, an assortment of spring clamps, and dedicated pipe hardware for any recurring grid or speed-rail work. The exact mix depends on your jobs. Product photographers may burn through spring clamps and super clamps, while a grip package doing commercial sets will get far more mileage from Cardellinis, Mafers, pins, and speed-rail accessories.
